AirXpanders is developing technology to address current unmet needs for patients who require tissue expansion after reconstructive surgery with the first emphasis in breast reconstruction. Present methods of tissue expansion utilize saline filled implants that are typically injected on a weekly basis after surgery in order to reach the volume of skin and tissue required for the placement of a permanent breast implant.
With AirXpanders technology, patients initiate implant expansion by a wireless remote control unit that activates a small gas reservoir within the implant to release a predetermined volume. Unlike saline injections performed in the doctor's office, tissue expansion may be performed at the patient's convenience in her own home. Gradual release of gas on a daily basis allows a more gradual and gentle method of tissue expansion.
