AirXpanders has a committed group of professionals with over 150 years of combined experience in medical device and technology development. AirXpanders team is led by some of the industry’s most exceptional leaders and innovators.

Frank Grillo
President & CEO
Mr. Grillo is President, CEO and a member of the BOD of AirXpanders. He has over 20 years of experience in the US medical device industry. He previously served for ten years in multiple roles with Boston Scientific Corporation, including Vice President, Marketing for its Women’s Health, Urology/Gynecology Division. Mr. Grillo was then recruited to Kyphon, where he led the marketing organization for its US$400 million US-based business as Vice President, Marketing and Business Development. Mr. Grillo then joined Intuitive Surgical Inc where he was a senior executive responsible for the marketing and business development function for the multi-billion-dollar surgical systems company. As Vice President, Marketing and New Business Development, he directed the company’s marketing strategy and implementation of marketing programs; oversaw all product launches worldwide; and organized and managed initiatives to drive both procedural adoption and sales in numerous surgical specialties while providing oversight for acquisition and licensing activities. Most recently, Mr. Grillo was at MRI Interventions, where he served as President and CEO.

Mr. Grillo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University and a Master of Business Administration degree in Marketing, Finance and Operations from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
Scott Murcray
Scott has more than 20 years of finance experience in various senior finance leadership and management roles with Nanometrics Incorporated, ZOLL Medical Corporation, and VNUS Medical Technologies, among others. Scott’s broad background in finance and operations includes managing finance and accounting, manufacturing operations, sales operations, customer service, IT and human resources. In addition, he has led numerous rounds of debt and equity financings, as well as acquisitions and related integrations. Scott is a former audit manager of Arthur Andersen LLP. He is a CPA and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California.
Melissa Comunale
VP of Sales
Melissa brings over 15 years of sales and marketing leadership experience in the medical device industry. She has worked with companies including Stryker, Baxter, and Invuity in the plastics, breast, spine, and orthopaedics market segments. Melissa joined AirXpanders in January 2017 serving as our Senior Director of Sales for the Eastern US where she successfully built and led her team through the US commercial launch of AeroForm. She plays an integral role in our company's corporate sales training program as well as marketing initiatives and special projects. Prior to joining AirXpanders, Melissa was the National Sales Trainer and Senior Area Sales Manager for Invuity, where she managed independent partners and launched a disruptive technology focusing on women's health and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Melissa is fluent in Spanish and earned an MBA, Master of Science in the College of Health and Human Performance, and a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Florida.
Mark Payne
VP, Research & Development
Mark has extensive leadership experience in research and development with a focus on the execution of innovative early stage technologies. He has held positions as a Research Engineer/Scientist for Cytyc Surgical Products and Director of Mechanical Systems Design for United Technologies, where he and his teams worked on and delivered multiple advanced technology products. Mark has more than 15 US and international patents and has published more than 12 technical papers and articles. Mark received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from University of Michigan and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, where he completed the Biodesign Innovation Sequence.
Belinda Pinedo
Director, Regulatory Affairs
Belinda brings more than 20 years of Regulatory experience in the medical device industry. Prior to joining AirXpanders, Belinda held a senior management role with DFine, Inc. where she led various successful domestic and international company growth efforts and supported project development teams until its acquisition. Throughout her career, she has held numerous Regulatory positions with companies such as DFine, Medtronic, Kyphon, Stryker and a number of other medical device companies. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business from San Jose State University.
Kirsty Amland
Business Director, Asia Pacific
Kirsty joined AirXpanders in early 2015 to lead the company’s first global commercial efforts in Australia. Kirsty brings over 15 years of experience in the medical device industry across marketing, sales and finance. Prior to joining AirXpanders, she spent 13 years at Johnson & Johnson MD&D where she gained substantial experience commercialising new technologies. In her most recent role, Kirsty was responsible for marketing for the Mentor business unit, where she led the launch of the first human tissue-based dermal matrix for breast reconstruction into the Australian market. Kirsty has an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management and a Bachelor of Science in International Business from St Louis University.
Laurel Burk
Director of Marketing
Laurel joined AirXpanders in March 2018 as the Director of Marketing, bringing almost 20 years of experience in marketing and professional education with a focus on early-stage medical device companies. She has extensive experience and knowledge in upstream and downstream marketing ranging from capital equipment to surgical disposables. Prior to joining AirXpanders, she held a senior management role at Viveve where she led international commercialization efforts and their successful US product launch. Throughout her career, she has held numerous Marketing and Professional Education positions at Accuray, Xoft, Kyphon, Intuitive Surgical, and a number of other medical device startups. Laurel holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, and is a member of the Court of Master Sommelier.
